Sex Therapy

The World Health Organization defines sexual health as “…a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination, and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected, and fulfilled.” (WHO, 2006a).

Alex is passionate about sex therapy. Alex received sex therapy training through the Stephanie Buehler Institute and Modern Sex Therapy Institute where she is working toward her doctorate in clinical sexology. Alex is also engaging in ongoing education and practice of tantra. While only about 5% of tantra is sexuality-focused, most of the skills and education can be applied in various areas of living to increase pleasure and awareness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does sex therapy help with?

Sex therapy can include an extremely wide range of sexual health issues, including but not limited to anatomy specific sexual disorders (such as Erectile Dysfunction, Premature Ejaculation, Female Orgasmic Disorder, Dyspareunia, etc.), intimacy issues within a relationship, sexual function, and performance concerns, arousal and/or pleasure issues, problems related to desire and/or pain, gender, and sexual orientation, etc. Alex also uses tantra and other practices that can be applied for sexual enhancement or relationship building.

Do I need to be in a relationship to participate in sex therapy?

Sex therapy can be applied to an individual or couple. Sometimes, Alex may ask to invite the partner (if there is one) to the therapeutic process. But a relationship is not necessary.

Is sex therapy uncomfortable?

Sex therapy can provide the space to exhale and talk about a basic part of ourselves that we often shy away from. It can also be graphic, explicit, and at times challenging. It may take a willingness to be uncomfortable in order to move forward and reduce overall suffering. But you are never forced to talk about anything. Education is always utilized to rebuild a healthy attitude and understanding of sexuality.

I am not straight, can I work with you?

Alex fully supports, affirms, and celebrates any and all sexual and gender identities: LGBTQQIP2SAA+

Is sex therapy enough?

Alex may refer to a physician or pelvic floor specialist for an exam, depending on the symptoms. Often, a medical exam is needed to rule out possible causes. Pelvic floor specialists may provide further information, as well as physical tools that could aid in reducing the intensity of symptoms. Sometimes other forms of therapy may be interwoven into the therapeutic experience, depending on presenting issues and concerns that may arise.

Is there homework?

Yes! There is always homework with therapy. Sometimes, there is very specific homework prearranged and clarified during the session. This could include touching exercises or games to play, as well as communication exercises. Often for a relationship, education and specific exercises are designed to rebuild the sexual relationship from the ground up.
